Former Central Banker Mark Carney won the race to become the leader of the Liberal Party in the ruling Canada and will follow Justin Trudeau as prime minister, showed official results on Sunday.
Carney will take over in a shocked time in Canada, which is in the midst of a commercial war with the long -standing allies of the United States and must soon be developing a general choice.
Carney, 59, received 86% of the votes cast to defeat former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in a competition that voted just under 152,000 party members.
Tredeau announced in January that he would withdraw more than nine years in power as his appreciation of approval decreased, forcing the Liberal Party in the ruling competition to replace it.
“Don’t make a mistake, this is a decisive moment of the nation. Democracy is not given. Freedom is not given. Even Canada is not given,” Trudeau said.
“Now, as Canadians face, from our neighbor, an existential challenge, an economic crisis, the Canadians are showing exactly what we have done.”
Carney, a political novice, argued that he was best determined to revive the party and oversee trade negotiations with US President Donald Trump, who is threatening additional tariffs that could damage the Canada export -dependent economy.
Carney was the first leader, with the best approval of the party members and the most collected money among the four liberal candidates.
Carney’s victory marks the first time that a foreigner without true political origin has become Canadian prime minister. He has said his experience as the first person to serve as Governor of the two G7 – Canada and England central banks – meant that he was the best candidate to deal with Trump.
During the campaign, Carney said he supported the dollar’s revenge fees for the United States and a coordinated strategy to increase investment. He has repeatedly complained that the growth of Canada under Trudeau was not good enough.
The prospect of a new start for the Liberal Party under Carney, combined with Trump’s tariffs and his repeated wanders in the Canadian appendix as the 51st US state, led to an extraordinary revival of liberal assets.
The moment of rally
At the beginning of 2025, the party traveled 20 or more points, but is now statistically linked to official opposition conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre career politician in several surveys.
In a protest outside the Canada Parliament building in Ottawa on Sunday, dozens of Canadians held signs protesting with Trump without any reference to domestic politics.
“There is an attractive moment-circular moment that we would never anticipate a year ago,” said British Columbia University Professor Richard Johnston. “I think it’s probably true when we talk that the liberals are saved from forgetfulness.”
Two Liberal Party sources said Carney would call elections in the coming weeks.
However, surveys show that neither the liberals nor the conservatives would be able to form a majority government. A choice should be held until October 20th.
Carney could legally serve as prime minister without a place in the House of Municipalities, but tradition dictates that he should seek to win one as soon as possible.
In 1984, John Turner was not a lawmaker when he became prime minister after winning a Liberal Leadership race.
The Liberals tried to compare conservative leader Pierre Pailievre with Trump in a recent ad. Pailievre on the other hand raised attacks on Carney on Sunday.
Liberals “will attract a dirt trick tonight,” Pailievre said at a campaign rally. “They will try to be elected for a fourth term by replacing Justin Trudeau with his economic adviser, Mark Carney. … Donald Trump will have a big smile on his face.”
Carney has played a role in Trudeau’s counseling, noting that his many global obligations left him for a short time. Carney resigned from all commercial posts after he began his January leadership offer.
